Ring is an important wedding part in many cultures. The wedding ceremony itself may vary from one country to another, but the engagement ring is the thing which is common to all people. And, as usual, it is a piece of true beauty. What is special about Indian wedding rings? Like most other rings, they are made of gold, silver or even platinum. Rings are encrusted with gems of all kinds — from agates and sapphires to emeralds and diamonds. However, gold is more preferable, as well as red gems – rubys, bixbite (an expensive type of beryl) and red diamonds. As a rule, Indian ring is rich in ornament – one can see exquisitely crafted flowers, palm-tree branches and even Indian religious subjects on it.
Nose Wedding Rings or “Nuts”Apart of the wedding ring, an Indian bride wears a lot of other jewelery – maangitkas (is put to the bride's parting), earrings, necklaces, circlets and nose rings.
Indian nose ringsare peculiar specifically to the Indian wedding. It has to be in harmony with colour and design of earrings. Nut (an Indian name for this ring) is attached into nose with a chainlet, which itself often might be ornated and encrusted with gems. Indians believe, that nose performs not only smell functions, but it is also responsible for sexual reflexes. So, when nose is pierced for the nut, lust decreases and woman is focused on her husband only. But what is also very important, is that Indian wedding nose ring is delicate, charming and enigmatic.
Beliefs and TraditionsIndians have some traditions and beliefs referred to the wedding ring. For example, they believe that the best wedding ring is the one which bride has inherited from her mother. Indian girls consider it as a great honor. You can not marry twice when your spouse dies. It means, that once you gave a wedding ring to one who loves you, you are not supposed to do that again. This action is permanent.
Love of GoldIndia is the larges consumer of gold. In the 1998 this country had imported 700 tonnes of this metal. And this is only an official figure, which doesn't include golden jewelery smuggled by Indians when they came back to their homeland from abroad. Indian love of gold lies deep. In Indian mythology gold was a symbol of eternal fire, light, life and (what is much more important) the symbol of divinity, as well as immortality. Such Indian holy books like Vedas, Puranas, Upnishads mention gold as one of the most valuable things. Even men wear golden neck chains, circlets and rings. So, Indians are very religious people, and this love of gold is reasonable.
